Developing new ideas
23rd March 2023
I’ve started to explore a new line and vases are my choice of form. My focus is on decoration and the surface.
The vase shapes are created by lathe turned plaster and hand carving facets to alter their shape.
Even though the vases are cast from a mould they are also individual. Thinly rolled pieces of porcelain take on impressions from handmade press moulds. They are then laid into the main mould. The textured clay pieces are embedded within the form during the casting process, to add composition and decoration. These notions will play an important role and combined with the mix of tinted glazes that are applied to create one-off effects.
Glossy and flowing is the best way to describe my new glaze recipe. It has an almost metallic quality depending on which colourants are used. I’m exploring how the different tinted glazes interact and move together. How they connect with the character of the exterior, whether it is upright, flat, a corner or a textured motif.
I guess that there are no limits as to where this can go!…
